Tight security marks SGPC election

Onkar Singh in Amritsar

Tight security marked the election for the office bearers of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Tuesday.

The Punjab police had virtually barricaded almost all routes leading to the Golden Temple complex, and particularly the one that led to Teja Singh Samundari Hall in Guru Ram Das Sarai.

All markets within 500 metres of the Golden Temple were closed and the visitors allowed entry only after frisking.

Barring the VVIP cars that were allowed to go beyond the first security cordon, most of those wanting to go to Harmandir Saheb had to park their cars nearly two kilometres away.

Even the media persons were allowed in after a thorough check up.

Punjab government had deputed its information officers at various gates to recognise the media persons and it was only after they gave their nod that a newsperson was allowed to cross numerous security cordons one after and the other.

Though the election got over by 4 pm the security forces had not removed the barriers till 6 pm in the evening. "We are awaiting further instructions," a senior police officer told rediff.com.
