Amarinder worse than Aurangzeb: Badal

Onkar Singh in Amritsar

After his party candidate Jathedar Kirpal Singh Badungar was re-elected as the president of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, former chief minister of Punjab Parkash Singh Badal described Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh as 'worse than Mughal emperor Aurangzeb'.

Speaking to rediff.com at Guru Ram Das Sarai in the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar, Badal said the defeat of the rival candidate put up by former SGPC chief Jathedar Gurcharan Singh Tohra should bring the 'intoxicated' chief minister back to his sense.

"I believe someone told him that he could break the Akali Dal by resorting to terror tactics and if managed to achieve this he would go down in the history of Sikhs. He unleashed a reign of terror in the state and chased the members of the SGPC in his bid to grab power of the supreme body that controls the Sikh Gurdwaras in India," he claimed. "He even did not spare the wives and children of the members of the committee and harassed them no end."

He condemned the issuance of non-bailable arrest warrant against Bibi Jagir Kaur, former president of the SGPC, for theft of electricity.

"Bibiji has already paid the Punjab State Electricity Department and also paid penalty on that. This was a blatant attempt to prevent Bibi Jagir Kaur from voting in the elections," he said.

He did not agree with the statement issued by Jathedar Simaranjit Singh Mann, president of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) that the victory of his candidate amounted to the victory of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

"Not even a single minister of the BJP was involved in this process. The BJP has no role in the SGPC," he said.
