BSF fails to locate intruders
in Bay of Bengal

M Chhaya in Kolkata

Despite a day-long search in the Bay of Bengal, Indian security forces on Sunday failed to locate the foreign trawlers that had allegedly attacked a group of Indian fishermen on Saturday.

The Border Security Force in close coordination with the Coast Guard employed a hovercraft and a Dornier aircraft to locate the intruders, but had found nothing till evening.

Nine foreign trawlers reportedly carrying Thai fishermen had attacked Indian fishermen near the Kendodeep island on Saturday evening.

"Security forces so far have found no trace of any foreign trawlers," District Magistrate of South 24 Pargana Alapon Bandopadhyay told reporters.

"BSF and Coast Guard personnel are still searching the area," he added.

Bandopadhyay refuted reports that around 100 Indian fishermen had been taken hostage by the intruders. "This is not correct. No Indian fisherman is missing," he said

West Bengal Minister for Sunderbans Kanti Ganguly earlier told reporters the incident was being viewed with much seriousness because of intelligence inputs about subversive elements trying to enter India through the Bay of Bengal.
