BSF begins operation to drive
out Thai fishermen

M Chhaya in Kolkata

The Border Security Force and the Coast Guard began an operation on Sunday to drive out suspected Thai fishermen who had fired upon Indian trawlers on Saturday in the Bay of Bengal.

The intruders came in nine trawlers to Kendodeep, an island located just 1 km off the Bangladesh coastline, on Saturday evening and attacked the Indian fishermen.

"We are awaiting the details of that operation. The job should not take much time," Bengal Minister for Sunderbans Kanti Ganguly said.

He said the state government had taken a serious note of the intrusion in the light of an intelligence warning that subversive elements could enter India through the Bay of Bengal.

There were reports that about 100 Indian fishermen were missing and that they could have been taken hostage by the intruders.

Indian security forces have left for the island through water and aerial routes.
