Bihar bans use of private boats during Chhat festival

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The Bihar government has banned the use of private boats in rivers, particularly in the Ganga, during the Chhat festival, which is expected to draw millions of worshippers.

The order stated that only boats carrying policemen and divers would be allowed during the festival, scheduled for Sunday.

The police has been alerted to ensure that the order is implemented in totality. Some ghats have been declared as dangerous.

The administration has also banned bursting of crackers and sale of liquor on ghats.

The steps have been taken to avoid a repeat of the Nariyal ghat tragedy near Patna in 1995 in which 66 people drowned in a boat mishap.
