Unilateral ceasefire of no
use in J&K: Azad

The Congress on Wednesday said a unilateral ceasefire by the Union government in its fight against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir would be of no use unless the gesture was reciprocated in the same spirit by the militants.

"A ceasefire is useful only when the other party positively responds to it," Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Ghulam Nabi Azad said.

"It was a good gesture on the part of the Central government when it had announced a unilateral ceasefire [during the holy month of Ramzan in the year 2000], but unfortunately the other party did not respond," Azad said.

He said although his party wanted to make all efforts to ensure peace in the Valley, it would "never compromise" on the country's stated position on Jammu and Kashmir.
