Chhapra mishap disrupts train services

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Train services on the Chhapra-Siwan section of the Benaras division of North-Eastern Railway were disrupted following Tuesday morning's collision between the Gwalior-Barauni Express and the Janseva Express between Kopa and Tekaniwas railway stations.

Railway officials said while some trains have been diverted via Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, others are running behind schedule.

Normal traffic on the route is likely to resume by late Tuesday night, they said.

Railway Minister Nitish Kumar told reporters in Delhi that the driver of the Gwalior-Barauni Express and his assistant are missing.

He, however, said the cause of the mishap was yet to be ascertained. "It could be engine failure or human failure. Investigations are on. Such an incident should not have occurred," the minister said.

The Railway Safety Commissioner (North Eastern Circle) will initiate the statutory inquiry into the accident on November nine, official sources said in Delhi.

Within hours of an accident, the Railways Ministry suspended six employees, including the driver, assistant driver and guard of Gwalior-Barauni Express, ministry sources told PTI.
