Three army personnel honoured
with Vir Chakra

For the first time after the 1999 Kargil conflict, the government on Saturday presented wartime Vir Chakra awards to three army personnel for their exploits against Pakistani forces along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir during the year long Operation Parikrama.

Major Manoj M Deshpande, Havildar Chuni Lal of the 8 Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry and Major Amitabh Roy of the Garhwal Rifles were honoured for what their citation described as 'special missions' on the LoC when troops were deployed along the border with Pakistan.

The forces are now being brought back to their peacetime locations.

Armed forces officers and jawans who fought valiantly against terrorists, ploughed through mounds of rubble to rescue people in the aftermath of the Gujarat quake and some those who made it to Mt Everest were among 79 service personnel decorated by President A P J Abdul Kalam at a glittering military investiture ceremony held in the ceremonious Darbar Hall of Rashtrapathi Bhavan.

In the presence of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Deputy Prime Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani and other distinguished guests, the President presented 3 Vir Chakras, 8 Param Vishist Seva Medals (PVSM), 4 Kirti Chakras, 26 Ati Vishisht Seva Medals and 38 Shaurya Chakras.
