In a bid to check human rights violations and custodial deaths, lockups in the 60-odd police stations in the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad in Andhra Pradesh have been shut down.
These lockups will be converted either into computer rooms or rest rooms for the policemen.
Police Commissioner M V Krishna Rao said that there will now be only one lockup in each division, under the direct charge of the assistant commissioner of police of the respective division.
The ACPs will be responsible for maintaining these lockups and the safety of the inmates. They also have to check on the inmates on a daily basis and verify the entries in the sentry relief book.
The sentry relief book, to be kept at all the divisional lockups, will consist of the details of the persons being lodged, such as name, address, crime, and police stations where the offences were booked.
The ACPs would also have to ensure that there is no opportunity for the person in the lock-up to attempt suicide or escape from custody.
Circle inspectors will now need the permission of the ACP concerned to lodge any person for interrogation after furnishing all the details.
Zonal deputy commissioners of police have been directed to make surprise checks to ensure that no persons have been lodged without proper authorisation.
