Decide on presidential candidate: Congress to Sonia

The Congress Working Committee on Wednesday adopted a resolution authorising party chief Sonia Gandhi to take all decisions regarding the presidential election.

However, the CWC did not discuss any names during the meeting, party spokesman S Jaipal Reddy said.

He said Gandhi would discuss the names of probable candidates with the National Democratic Alliance and other parties.

The Congress has already hailed K R Narayanan as "one of our exceptionally good Presidents". But the party has made it clear that it would come out with its candidate only after Gandhi discusses the issue with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The NDA had earlier authorised Vajpayee to take a decision on the issue in consultation with the Opposition.

Bharatiya Janata Party sources said that they had zeroed in on Maharashtra Governor P C Alexander for the top post.

President Narayanan's term is ending on July 24.
