Fire in electronic goods market in Delhi, 3 injured

At least three people were injured and electrical goods and appliances worth lakhs of rupees destroyed when a fire swept through the busy Chandi Chowk market in old Delhi on Thursday afternoon.

Describing the blaze as 'medium' in intensity, Delhi Fire Service chief S K Sharma said that the fire broke out at 1140 hrs in Shop No 208 and soon engulfed 30 adjoining shops.

Though no casualties have been reported so far, some ambulances have been rushed to the spot to rescue persons who may be trapped in the shops.

More than 25 fire tenders have been pressed into service to douse the blaze.

"The fire has been 'surrounded', which means it will not be allowed to spread. We have enough fire tenders to bring the situation under control," he said.

The congested lanes and bylanes prevented fire tenders from reaching the spot promptly, Sharma said.

Though the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, short-circuit is suspected, fire brigade sources said.

The extent of the damage is not yet known.
