Statutory inquiry ordered into train mishap

Railway Minister Nitish Kumar told the Lok Sabha on Monday that a statutory inquiry had been ordered into Sunday's Shramjeevi Express accident in Uttar Pradesh.

"While the railway officials suspect sabotage as the prima facie cause, the state government officials attribute it to collapse of a bridge," Kumar told the House.

The Commissioner of Railway Safety (Northern Circle), G P Garg, who had been asked to hold the inquiry, had reached the site of the accident and started investigations, he said.

On getting report from the CRS, action would be taken against persons responsible and remedial steps would be initiated to prevent the recurrence of such accidents, the minister said.

The CRS would commence a detailed inquiry at Jaunpur on May 15.

Twelve people lost their lives and 49 suffered injuries when the 2402 Down New Delhi-Patna Express derailed on Faizabad-Zafarabad section of Lucknow division at about 0335 hours on Sunday.

The railway minister announced enhancement of ex-gratia payment to the tune of Rs 100,000 to the next of kin of the dead, Rs 15,000 for the grievously injured and Rs 5,000 to those with simple injuries.

In addition, directions were issued to railway officials to help the injured passengers in filling up claims forms so that they could get compensation from the Railway Claims Tribunal expeditiously, Kumar said.

He said the ex-gratia amount being given was besides the compensation amount due to them.
