No trace of Bihar speaker's grandson

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

Even 20 days after he went missing, there is no trace of Sagar, the five-year-old grandson of Bihar legislative assembly speaker Sadanand Singh.

Sagar was kidnapped on April 23 from Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district while he was on his way to school along with his younger sister.

Bhagalpur Superintendent of Police R K Mishra said that so far no ransom call had been received and the family members deny enmity with anybody.

Nevertheless, the police is raiding on all possible, known and unknown, criminal hideouts and teams had been sent even to Farakka and Malda areas in West Bengal and various places in Jharkhand in search of the missing boy, sources said.

Till date, the police have arrested over 50 anti-social elements but failed to make any headway in the investigation.

A worried Singh has cancelled his official foreign trip in view of the kidnapping.

The house of Sunil Singh, father of the kidnapped boy, wears a desolate look. The boy's mother is so upset that has stopped talking.

Considering Sadanand Singh's status, Chief Minister Rabri Devi is taking a personal interest in the case giving sleepless nights to the state's police force.

"Following the delay on the part of the state police in tracing Sagar, the case has been handed over to a special task force headed by an officer of the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police," a senior official said.

The task force is probing the alleged involvement of a notorious criminal gang operating in the riverine areas of Bhagalpur, R K Mishra said.

Mishra said that Sagar's case was a bit complicated as the motive behind the kidnapping could not be established.

However, sources said that the kidnappers have established contact with Singh's family and even demanded Rs five million (Rs 50 lakh) in ransom. Singh has a well-established fertiliser business in Bihar.
