Renowned Marathi litterateur, thinker and staunch proponent of the freedom of expression Durga Bhagwat died at her residence in Mumbai on Tuesday after a long illness, her family said. She was 92 and a spinster.

Besides being a writer and thinker, she will be remembered in the annals of Marathi literature as a staunch upholder of democracy and for her fiery speech against the Emergency as president of the 51st All India Marathi Literary Meet at Karad (Maharashtra).

Born in Indore, Bhagwat did her BA in Sanskrit from St Xavier's College, Mumbai. She spent six years in the jungles of Madhya Pradesh preparing a thesis on tribals.

She had also done a deep study of the epics - Mahabharat and the Ramayan.

Bhagwat received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972.

Her well-known works include Rutuchakra, Vyasparva, Bhavmudra, Paij, Lahani, Godhadi, Nisargotsava, Ruprang, Poorva, Ranzara and Parvati Ani Kalika.

A scholarly figure, she was an expert on anthropology, sociology and Buddhist literature and was proficient in Sanskrit, Pali, Bengali and German.
