Vote on censure motion in RS on Monday

A vote on the censure motion on the Gujarat issue was deferred on Friday after the opposition in the Rajya Sabha attacked the National Democratic Alliance over the riots in the state.

The voting will now take place on Monday.

The opposition accused the Centre and the state government of having failed to restore normalcy and protect life and property, particularly of minorities, in Gujarat.

Congress member Suresh Pachouri spearheaded the opposition attack and said Chief Minister Narendra Modi had no moral right to continue, as the state had become a "crucible of communal politics" under his regime.

BJP members denied the charge and accused the opposition parties of trying to divide the country under the garb of secularism.

They blamed the media, particularly the electronic media, for arousing passions by their coverage.

Over 60 members participated in the two-day debate on the seven-line motion entailing voting.

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is scheduled to intervene on Monday.
