Authorities decide to storm Chapra jail, fresh violence erupts

The district administration on Saturday prepared to storm the Chapra jail and break the siege by inmates even as a policeman was injured in a fresh incident of violence in the prison, official sources said.

Top officials of the district held a high-level meeting in the morning and decided to barge into the jail and take control of the prison, the sources said.

Bihar Minister of State for Jails Ashok Choudhry said in Patna, "The situation in Chapra jail is under control. I have directed the district administration to take appropriate action to defuse the crisis."

The minister said he was in regular touch with the Chapra jail administration and hoped that the situation would be resolved soon.

Meanwhile on Saturday, angry relatives blocked the main throughfare and started throwing stones when food items they had brought on the occasion of Holi for the inmates were not allowed inside.

The inmates also joined them and pelted stones at the security guards, one of who was injured.

The jail premises has been surrounded by the police to meet any eventuality, the police said, adding the injured person has been admitted to a government hospital.

The situation in the jail turned violent on Wednesday when the administration decided to transfer five prisoners to Buxar central jail.

Irked by the decision, the inmates pelted stones at the jail staff and forcibly threw the jail employees and security staff out.

They locked the main gate of the jail and took control of the prison.
