Congress, BJP crack down on rebel MLAs

The Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party on Thursday cracked down on rebel MLAs for cross-voting in the recently held Rajya Sabha elections.

The BJP expelled six MLAs in Karnataka from the primary membership of the party for six years within hours of the rebel legislators casting their vote against party nominee Taradevi Siddartha, who lost to liquor baron Vijay Mallya, an independent candidate.

Terming the action against them as "malafide," the expelled MLAs claimed they had not voted for Mallya for money and blamed Union ministers Ananth Kumar and Venkaiah Naidu for the "present sorry state of affairs" in the party.

In Orissa, three Congress MLAs who had sponsored the candidature of the expelled Biju Janata Dal leader Dillip Ray were suspended from the party.
