Parliamentary democracy to be upheld: Musharraf

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday sought to dismiss speculations that he was trying to legitimise his stay in power through a referendum.

He assured that parliamentary democracy, as envisaged in the 1973 constitution, would be safeguarded and no move was under consideration to switch to presidential or any other form of government, a delegation of the Awami National Party and Sindh Democratic Alliance said after a meeting with the president on Tuesday night.

Musharraf told the delegation that he was not contemplating changes to the basic structure and spirit of the constitution, which accorded primacy to parliamentary democracy, but at the same expressed his determination to bring in balance of powers between the president, prime minister and the army chief, they said.

He, however, told them that his government was empowered to make certain changes to the constitution as per the supreme court order, which conferred legitimacy on his regime.
