One person was injured when police fired 24 rounds to quell two groups that clashed in Chanchalguda area of Old Hyderabad late on Tuesday.
The person injured was a cyclist, Altaf Naseeb Khan, 24. Three others sustained injuries in stone-pelting.
Trouble started at about 2130 IST when a mob hurled stones at some houses. The incident was the fallout of the clash between two groups of youths on Monday night.
On Monday, Raghu and Srinivas, sons of a history-sheeter, the late Kotha Das, had stabbed a scooterist, Altaf Hussain, with whom they had a score to settle. Hussain was admitted to a private hospital.
Thereafter, rival groups threw stones on houses and some places of worship. Additional forces were deployed and police pickets posted at various places under the Dabirpura police station limits. Raghu was arrested.
The pickets were being withdrawn on Tuesday when some miscreants threw liquor bottles near a place of worship. Soon two groups gathered and threw stones at 20 houses and 10 shops. The police rushed back and resorted to a cane-charge to disperse the groups.
Around 2200 IST, as the situation worsened, the police opened fire in the air at three places to drive away the warring groups. A stray bullet hit Altaf Khan, who was passing by, in the right hand. He was rushed to the Osmania General Hospital where his condition is said to be stable.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (south zone) Govind Singh and Mir Chowk Assistant Commissioner of Police Ratnakar Babu visited the spot and deployed the Rapid Action Force. Community elders and Maithri (a community policing organisation) members intervened to pacify the rival groups.
