Judicial inquiry ordered into Gangapur police firing

Bowing to opposition pressure, the Rajasthan government on Tuesday announced a judicial inquiry into Monday's police firing in Gangapur city, which claimed three lives.

The inquiry would be conducted by retired high court judge under Commission of Inquiry Act 1992, Home Minister Gulab Singh Shaktawat told the state assembly.

Angry Bharatiya Janata Party members, who had given a notice of adjournment motion over the Monday's 'police brutality', created a pandemonium in the House forcing its adjournment twice by Speaker Paras Ram Maderna, who said he would decide fate of the motion only after receiving a reply from the government.

Stating that no guilty persons would be spared, Shaktawat, however, turned down the demand for removal of police and administrative officials who ordered the firing.

Alleging that the presence of erring officials in the field would scuttle free and fair inquiry, the BJP members, led by former chief minister Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, staged a noisy walkout.
