POTO's withdrawal in Afroz's case
was not govt decision: Bhujbal

The Maharashtra government on Tuesday night washed its hands off the controversy surrounding the withdrawal of charges framed under POTO against suspected Al-Qaeda terrorist Mohammad Afroz.

Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said the decision was taken by the police independently.

Making a statement in the legislative assembly, Bhujbal said the state government had neither directed the city police to apply provisions of POTO in Mohammad Afroz's case nor had it issued orders to withdraw the charges.

"The government is not creating hurdles in the working of the police...applying laws is their job," Bhujbal said.

Bhujbal's Nationalist Congress Party voted in favour of the anti-terrorism bill in the joint sitting of Parliament.
