Two Lashkar terrorists nabbed in Faizabad

Sharat Pradhan in Lucknow

The Special Task Force of Uttar Pradesh police on Tuesday nabbed two terrorists of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayiba outfit in Faizabad.

R K Pandit, state director general of police, said, "The militants belonged to Laskhar-e-Tayiba and were held with lethal explosives and an AK-47 rifle while they were heading for Ayodhya."

Pandit said, "The STF had been working on a tip off about a LeT module setting its foot in this part of the state sometime back; since then our sleuths were looking for them."

He said, "There was reason to believe that the arrested militants were perhaps part of the same module."

While one was identified as Ashraf, a resident of Miawali in Punjab (Pakistan), the other, Mazhar hailed from Liaqabad in Karachi.

Besides three AK 47 magazines with 72 rounds, about 1.75 kilograms of RDX, detonators, sophisticated timer devices, Pakistani currency worth Rs 600, Indian currency worth Rs 18,000, a telephone diary and identity cards were also recovered from their possession.

The telephone diary, which was recovered from the arrested terrorists, contained numbers of their LeT contacts in India and Pakistan, a police spokesman said.

The two are likely to be booked under Prevention of Terrorism Ordinance.
