Security tightened at Charminar, Golconda fort

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

Security has been tightened in and around Charminar and Golconda fort in Hyderabad, following intelligence inputs that the Pakistan-based terrorist outfit Jaish-e-Mohammed has threatened to blow up historical monuments in the country.

Hyderabad Police Commissioner M V Krishna Rao personally went round Charminar a couple of days ago to take stock of the security measures.

The Archaeological Survey of India, which takes care of the two monuments, has also stepped up security.

Eight ASI personnel are posted around Charminar on watch and ward duties, but the ASI has deployed six more personnel in view of the threat.

The Hyderabad police have also posted 10 armed policemen inside Charminar.

Watch and ward staff has been increased and private security engaged at Golconda fort. The police have also strengthened security at the fort.

ASI officials said that visitors would be frisked as a precautionary measure.
