Congress demands action against Modi

The Congress party on Monday demanded immediate 'appropriate action' against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for 'committing contempt and breach of privilege of Parliament' for his reported remark that communal incidents are continuing in the state due to statements made in Parliament.

"It is incredible that Modi could be so irresponsible and insensitive so as to state that the communal incidents are continuing on account of statements in Parliament," Congress Working Committee members Pranab Mukherjee and Arjun Singh and Congress deputy leader Shivraj Patil said in a joint statement.

The statement said that Modi has clearly committed 'contempt and breach of privilege of Parliament'.

Noting that Modi's administration has been strongly indicted not only by political parties and human rights bodies, but by the entire media, the statement said that the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission Justice J S Verma faulted Modi's government for 'inaction and inefficiency in anticipating and controlling things'.
