PM announces financial package for Himachal

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Monday announced a financial package for cash-strapped Himachal Pradesh, which included special grant-in-aid of Rs two billion.

The Centre would also assist the state maintain its annual plan size at Rs 19 billion, besides increasing the financial assistance under the rural infrastructure development fund from Rs 1.5 billion to Rs three billion, Vajpayee told newspersons at a retreat, 20 km from Shimla.

He said the state would also receive Rs 500 million under the 'Valmiki Ambedkar Shahri Vikas Yojana' for providing houses for the weaker sections, provision of adequate funds for construction of 5,000 houses under the 'Indira Awas Yojana' and an additional allocation of Rs 500 million under the prime minister's 'Gramin Sarak Yojana'.

He said Rs 300 million would be provided for expansion of Kullu airport as part of a master plan for development of tourism in the state while the government would fund a project to ensure drinking water and basic sanitation facilities in two select districts of the state.
