Musharraf's threat childish, says Fernandes

K G Suresh in Laungwala

Defence Minister George Fernandes on Monday dismissed as 'childish' Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's threat to teach India an 'unforgettable lesson' and asked Islamabad not to mistake New Delhi's patience as weakness and force India into an armed conflict.

Addressing troops deployed along the Indo-Pak border on the western sector, Fernandes said that Musharraf was living in a 'make believe world' of his own and asked him not to forget Pakistan's aukat (standing) vis-a-vis India and underestimate India's power and potential.

"Our emphasis has been to get a positive response from Pakistan on the issue of putting an end to cross-border terrorism through diplomatic means and the global coalition against the menace of terrorism. We should not be forced to go in for an Afghanistan-style military operation to check the menace of terrorism sponsored from across the border," he said addressing troops in Laungwala, 15 km from the Indo-Pak border.
