India, Bangladesh to institutionalise meeting of border forces

India and Bangladesh on Monday decided to institutionalise flag meeting of their border security forces to avoid any major trouble along the border.

"Institutionalising flag meeting even when there is no crisis in order to avoid escalation in tension is some of the points of understanding that the border forces of the two countries reached," Border Security Force Director General Gurbachan Jagat said.

Jagat also signed a Joint Record of Discussion with Bangladesh Rifles DG Rezakul Haider.

The JRD came after three days of director general level talks between BSF and BDR.

Haider, who led a 20-member team, said that Bangladesh would look forward to a tranquil border with India.

He described last April's incident, in which 16 BSF and three BDR men were killed, as an 'unfortunate' event of the past.

The two sides reached understanding that there would be joint patrolling, joint sports events and arrangements for training to maintain peace along the border, Jagat said.

Assuring that no innocent Bangladeshis will be harassed, Jagat, however, said criminals operating along the border will be sternly dealt with.

He said that the issue of insurgent groups of northeast India operating from Bangladesh was addressed, but declined to divulge details.

The two sides also agreed to take tough measures to contain smuggling and other cross-border crimes.
