DMK snaps ties with BJP in Tamil Nadu

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday severed ties with the Tamil Nadu unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The move comes following the BJP's warming up to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

However, the DMK said that it would continue to be a partner in the National Democratic Alliance, as Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is an "honest man".

DMK president M Karunanidhi said that the state BJP leaders, particularly the MLAs, had been going "overboard" praising the AIADMK government and criticising the DMK.

"The BJP's Tamil Nadu unit leaders have been criticising us unnecessarily. We have been pushed to the wall. It is their (BJP's) own making," Karunanidhi said after a meeting of the party's general council.

"We will maintain our friendship with the central leadership. The DMK will continue to be a constituent of the NDA at the Centre, as Prime Minister A B Vajpayee is an honest man," he added.
