MCD polls end peacefully

Polling for the 134-member Municipal Corporation of Delhi ended peacefully on Sunday evening, with approximately 45 per cent votes being cast, which sealed the fate of 1,165 candidates.

Polling was brisk in the rural areas of the national capital while it was lull in the urban areas, especially the posh areas of Delhi.

In one of the Defence Colony booths, only one vote had been cast till 1500 hours, sources said.

The polls were being seen as a progress card for the Congress, which is in power at Delhi, and the Bharatiya Janata Party, an ally of the ruling National Democratic Alliance at the Centre.

More than 70,000 security personnel, including 40 paramilitary companies, were out to ensure peaceful and free polls being held at 9,447 booths.

While the Congress had fielded its candidates in all the 134 wards, the BJP, which had an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal and the Shiv Sena, had put up nominees in 132. The fate of 606 independents was also sealed with Sunday's voting.

There were some skirmishes and verbal altercations in some areas of outer Delhi, following which the local MLA Mahinder Singh Yadav was taken into preventive custody.

There were reports of bogus voting in some parts, which were being looked into by the state election commission.
