PM should resolve SYL canal dispute: Panel

A Parliamentary committee has sought intervention by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to resolve the Sutlej Yamuna Link Canal Project dispute involving Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan.

Expressing dismay over the casual approach shown by the concerned states, the committee felt that Vajpayee convene a meeting of chief ministers of the three states in order to arrive at an amicable settlement of the issue.

The Standing Committee on Agriculture was unhappy to note that the centrally funded project, which has completed its works by almost 90 per cent, was pending since 1990.

Every year provision of fund was made for this project, but no expenditure was being incurred under the project, as the work was at a standstill, the committee said.

It felt that concerted efforts had not been made by the government in this regard, despite repeated recommendations by the committee year after year to settle the issue at the earliest.
