Crisis averted; NCP accepts Tatkare's resignation

Acceding to the demand of an indignant Peasants' and Workers' Party, a key ally of ruling Democratic Front Government in Maharashtra, Nationalist Congress Party on Saturday decided to accept the resignation of Urban Development Minister Sunil Tatkare.

Senior NCP leader and Tribal Welfare Minister Madhukar Pichad said that the party leadership has decided to accept the resignation of Tatkare.

The PWP has accused Tatkare of hobnobbing with Shiv Sena during Raigad Zila Parishad president's election.

NCP sources said that Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal would forward the resignation letter to Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh later on Saturday.

The step is seen as a last minute effort to placate PWP, which had demanded Tatkare's exit from the ministry, failing which they threatened to pull out of the coalition.
