Nepalese premier leaves for Kolkata

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Nepal Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Dueba on Saturday left for Kolkata after winding up the first leg of his six-day visit to India.

The Nepali delegation joined former prime minister Chandrashekhar for breakfast at his residence in New Delhi and later left for Kolkata in a chartered Indian Airlines flight.

During his stay in the capital, the Nepalese premier met several Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

The home minister told him about India's concerns regarding the Inter-Services Intelligence's presence in Nepal. He accepted an invitation to visit Nepal soon.

India also offered to step up military assistance to Nepal. Sources said New Delhi might provide a few helicopter gunships, which could be extensively used in anti-Maoist operations.

The two nations agreed to take a comprehensive look at the 1953 Extradition Treaty, "which do not address several present day concerns of both the sides", an Indian diplomat said.
