Venkataswami panel gets extension for six months

The Venkataswami Commission, which is probing allegations of corruption in defence deals levelled by tehelka.com news portal, has got yet another extension for six months.

"We did not seek another extension this time, but the government decided to give the extension for six months," Justice K Venkataswami said.

The commission's second extension of four months expires on March 24.

Asked if he was satisfied with the progress of the investigation, the retired Supreme Court judge said: "I would have finished the probe in the second extension itself, but for the transcription of 101 unedited Tehelka tapes, which took nearly two months."

The commission was set up in March 2001 and began its hearing in June.
