In retaliation to the killing of eleven of its cadres on Saturday night, the Isak-Muivah faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim kidnapped the collector (called the deputy commissioner in the northeast) of Chandel district along with eight of his bodyguards on Monday, delayed reports received on Tuesday said.
The collector, Kh Thankeshare Singh, was travelling from Chandel, the district headquarters, to Palell, site of Saturday's encounter between NSCN-IM cadres and security personnel belonging to the India Reserve Battalion.
The collector's convoy was stopped by gun-toting NSCN-IM cadres who disarmed his bodyguards and then took all of them to an undisclosed destination, security sources in Imphal said.
There has been no further information about the kidnapping since then.
Meanwhile, the NSCN-IM has sought a clarification from the Centre over Saturday's killing. The outfit's information and publicity wing has termed the killing as 'an act of barbarism'.
Describing the attack is an 'insult to the Indo-Naga peace process', the publicity wing has warned of 'undesirable reprisals', if the security personnel involved in the incident were not punished.
Eleven NSCN-IM rebels were killed by soldiers after the guerrillas fired at a paramilitary patrol. The guerrillas, travelling in a truck, opened fire with automatic weapons at the patrol when they were stopped for a check late on Saturday at Palel in Chandel district.
The soldiers fired back, killing the rebels.
Several automatic weapons and ammunition including four sniper rifles, four AK 47 rifles, three SLRs, two carbines, three point .303 rifles and one hand grenade were recovered by the IRB personnel.
