Sibal to take over as foreign secretary
on Monday

Kanwal Sibal, Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, will take over as the new foreign secretary on Monday.

He succeeds Chokila Iyer, who retires on Sunday.

A 1966-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, Sibal served as India's ambassador to France from 1998 before taking over early this month as Secretary (West).

The 58-year-old has served in Cairo, Washington, Turkey, Kathmandu, Lisbon, Tanzania and London besides holding important slots in New Delhi.

Sibal, who will takeover on July 1, will have a tenure of 17 months.

Chokila Iyer created history of sorts in South Block by becoming the first ever woman foreign secretary in March last year. She was given a farewell reception on Saturday.

A number of key ambassadorial changes have also been announced. Nirupam Sen, India's ambassador to Norway, will swap places with Gopalkrishna Gandhi as high commissioner to Sri Lanka.

Harsh Bhasin will move to Islamabad as high commissioner, but no official announcement has been made as yet on his appointment.

He comes in place of Vijay K Nambiar, who was recalled in December last year following the attack on Parliament by Pakistani terrorists.

Nambiar is the new permanent representative to the UN, succeeding Kamalesh Sharma.

Official sources said other changes are also in the offing. Praveen Lal Goyal, Additional Secretary in the MEA, has been appointed as the next ambassador to Switzerland.
