Vajpayee clarifies his remarks to Abdullah

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Friday night spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah and clarified his remarks about imposition of President's Rule in the state.

The prime minister told Abdullah that during his press conference at Lucknow he was asked if the Centre would consider imposing President's Rule in the state to ensure free and fair election there, PMO sources said.

Vajpayee clarified the Centre was 'committed to ensuring free and fair election' in the state and the suggestion of imposition of President's Rule was one of the options.

According to the sources, Abdullah was satisfied with the prime minister's clarification.

The prime minister had said in Lucknow on Friday morning that there was a proposal for imposing President's Rule to ensure free and fair election in Jammu and Kashmir, a statement which evoked an angry reaction from Abdullah.
