India and Iran on Friday denounced and condemned terrorism in all its forms and agreed to cooperate in combating terrorism in the region.
They also reiterated their resolve to strengthen the international consensus, as reflected in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373, and legal regimes against terrorism, emphasising the need for early finalisation of a Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism.
This was stated in a press release issued by the Ministry of External Affairs on the meetings the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Hasan Roohani, had with National Security Adviser Brajesh Mishra.
Roohani is in India as a follow-up to the meeting between him and Mishra in April last year in Tehran during Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's visit.
Recalling Vajpayee's visit to Tehran in April 2001 and emphasising the importance of the Tehran Declaration of April 10, 2001, both sides noted with satisfaction the 'growing ties' between the two countries and the need for 'further deepening' their political and economic relations.
The entire gamut of bilateral relations, including economic cooperation, investments and trade, political issues, security matters came up during the discussion.
An understanding was thrashed out to promote realisation of specific projects of economic cooperation and for holding regular consultation on security related issues.
Noting that the ouster of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan had paved the way for the normalisation of the situation in that country, both sides stressed the need for accelerating the rehabilitation and reconstruction process in Afghanistan.
Reiterating the vital importance of their cooperation to security and stability in Asia, the two sides reaffirmed their principled support for the Palestinian cause and for the legitimate rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.
Roohani, who had also visited Mumbai, had an interaction with the top members of Indian business community and also visited the Mazagaon Docks.
Agreeing to institutionalise periodic consultations between the National Security Councils of the two countries on topical issues, Roohani invited his counterpart Brajesh Mishra to Tehran for further discussions.
The invitation was accepted dates for which would be finalised later through diplomatic channels.
