Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Ram Naik on Thursday reviewed the situation arising out of the terrorist attack on the drilling party of Oil and Natural Gas Commission workers in an interior area of Assam killing six people and seriously injuring one.
On the advice of the minister, Naresh Narad, additional secretary, ministry of petroleum and natural gas and Subir Raha, chairman, ONGC are rushing to the spot to take stock of the situation and implement further measures for beefing up security.
Y B Sinha, director (exploration), ONGC and Raman Srivastav, executive director (security), ONGC had already left earlier for the site of the incident.
Among the dead, two were from ONGC, including a senior geophysicist and assistant engineer, and four were employees of a contractor.
The incident took place on Monday when militants ambushed workers returning to their camp near Dhansri crossing.
They were travelling in vehicles under Central Industrial Security Force escort.
In the ambush, two officers of ONGC, Rajendra Prasad, superintendent geophysicist and R C Kakoti, assistant engineer (fitting), were killed.
Four contract employees, Parik, Jayram, C.R.Hanse and Samsul, also died in the crossfire.
Mithai Lal, superintendent geophysicist, one contract employee and three CISF personnel suffered serious injuries. The injured are receiving medical attention at the local hospital.
The minister has conveyed condolences to the families of the deceased. He has also directed that apart from compensation due to the officers and employees of the contractors, an ex-gratia payment of Rs 300,000 each to the families of all the deceased may be paid by ONGC.
