Kanchi seer receives letter threatening his life

The Shankaracharaya of Kanchi Swami Jayendra Saraswati, mediating in the Ayodhya dispute, received a letter written by supporters of banned Al-Umma outfit threatening his life, the police said on Thursday.

The letter received by the Kanchi mutt was written by supporters of Imam Ali, an Al-Umma activist, who gave a slip to the police, while being escorted to a court from Madurai prison about two months ago.

Police said the security at the mutt has been tightened.

Imam Ali, along with a co-prisoner Hyder Ali had escaped, but the latter was arrested.

Meanwhile, Madurai Police Commissioner K Vijay Kumar said that all information about the whereabouts of Ali was being viewed seriously.

"The police received several telephone calls, some anonymous, and even in writing of Imam Ali being seen in the city," he said, adding every bit of information was being followed up. He, however, claimed Imam Ali was not hiding in the city.
