Kerala journalists end boycott of assembly proceedings

The Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ) on Wednesday called off its month-long protest against the guidelines issued by the legislature secretariat on visual coverage of the assembly proceedings.

The agitation was called off following an assurance from Speaker Vakkom Purushothaman to restore the freedom enjoyed by the visual media in coverage of house proceedings, a KUWJ release said in Thiruvananthapuram.

An understanding was also reached on allowing news photographers and television camera crews to the press room of the assembly complex when the house is in session, the release added.

Private television channels had boycotted the Kerala assembly proceedings since the current session began on June 12 after they were barred from covering anything other than question hour, that too with certain restrictions.
