Death threat to Kanchi seer

N Sathiya Moorthy in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu police has beefed up security at the Kanchi Kamakoti mutt in the temple town of Kancheepuram following death threats to Shankaracharya Jayendra Saraswati.

A letter, signed by the "associates of Imam Ali", an extremist who had escaped from custody a few months ago, says an attempt will be made on the life of the Kanchi seer at Thiruvannamalai on Thursday.

The Shankaracharya will attend the kumbabhishekam of the Arunachaleshwarar temple.

Saraswati was given Z-category security after he associated himself with the ongoing talks over the Ayodhya issue in March this year.
