Justice Venkataswami accepts Jaitly's plea

Shahid K Abbas in New Delhi

Justice Venkataswami Commission on Wednesday accepted Samata Party president Jaya Jaitly's plea for re-screening of two of the tehelka.com tapes, after the tehelka.com attorneys raised no objections to her request.

Jaitly, who deposed before the Commission accompanied by her lawyers, pleaded for the examination of tape number 73 and 74 claiming they were severely 'tampered with'.

While the agreeing with the tehelka lawyer's contention that such an examination would restart the 'process all over again', Justice Venkataswami, however, accepted Jaitly's request that 'at least the tapes be played before the commission'.

In her 45-minute deposition Jaitly focussed on the 'differences of timing' in the two tapes, arguing they were edited.

She said, "Obviously the cameras were put on and off or there have been cuts. The conversation, in tape number 73 is different with the driver from what has been shown in the tape number 74."

She said that the sound of the door closing, recorded on both the tapes, had different timings, claiming that such a thing cannot happen 'unless the tapes have been tampered with'.
