Bush calls for new Palestinian leadership

In a statement, which could have far-reaching consequences, US President George W Bush on Monday called upon Palestinians to elect a new leadership to tackle the West Asia crisis.

"Today, the Palestinian leadership is encouraging, not opposing terrorism. This is not acceptable. Peace requires a new and different Palestinian leadership so that the Palestinian state can be born," he said while speaking at the White House.

"The United States will not support the establishment of a Palestinian state until its leaders engage in a sustained fight against terrorists," Bush said.

"A Palestinian state will never be created by terror," he asserted.

Bush called upon Israel to pull back to the pre-September 28, 2000, positions, halt settlements and release frozen Palestinian revenues.

Even as he was speaking, Israeli troops tightened their grip on Palestinian areas.
