Priyanka Gandhi delivers baby girl

Our Correspondent in New Delhi

There was jubilation at Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's 10 Janpath residence in New Delhi as her daughter, Priyanka Vadra, on Monday gave birth to a girl.

"Yes, Priyanka was blessed this morning with a baby girl," a party official said, adding that Sonia had gone to Ganga Ram Hospital to see her newborn grandchild.

"Right now all we know is that it is a healthy girl. We have distributed sweets among ourselves and everybody is happy that Madam [Sonia] has become a proud grandmother again," he said.

Priyanka has a three-year-old son, Rehan.

Another party worker said Sonia wanted it to be a low-key affair, as "it is a private matter". But that did not prevent party workers from heading for 10 Janpath to congratulate the Congress chief.

Sonia had not allowed Priyanka to canvass for the party during the assembly elections in February this year despite several pleas by party leaders from Uttar Pradesh.

A handful of Congress leaders from UP had repeatedly told Sonia that Priyanka's campaigning would bring in considerable electoral windfall.
