Presidential candidate A P J Abdul Kalam was accorded a hero's welcome when he arrived in Hyderabad on Saturday night.
Union Minister of State Bandaru Dattatreya and State Home Minister T Devender Goud were among those who received him at the Hyderabad airport.
Police officials threw a security cordon around him. His well-wishers greeted him and presented him bouquets. Later, Kalam drove to the Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory guesthouse in southern Hyderabad, where he will stay overnight.
This is Kalam's first visit to the city after he was chosen as the National Democratic Alliance's presidential candidate. On Sunday, Dr Kalam will attend the graduation ceremony of the foundation batch of the Indian School of Business.
Hyderabad has been like a second home for Kalam. He worked on the integrated guided missile development programme here for almost a decade from 1982 to 1991. He was a frequent visitor to Hyderabad during his tenures as the scientific advisor to the defence minister and principal scientific advisor to the prime minister.
Even after he left the government service, he has been coming to Hyderabad to participate in conferences and for interaction with school children.
