The Patna high court on Monday directed the Bihar government to pay compensation to the next of kin of patients who died during last week's three-day junior doctors' strike at the Patna Medical College and Hospital.
The court's three-member monitoring committee had visited the PMCH on Monday to probe the deaths, after it was reported in the local dailies.
The strike ended on Saturday following an assurance by the authorities to provide the doctors 'proper security', after one of them was allegedly assaulted by the relatives of a patient who died during treatment.
The strike claimed the lives of about three dozen patients, who were admitted to the hospital and did not have enough money to shift to private hospitals.
MP Gupta, one of the members of the committee, said that the state government is responsible for the deaths of patients during strike.
He also said the government should give compensation to all those patients who shifted to private clinics during the strike.
"Whatever expenditure was incurred by the patients who had to shift to private clinics, the state government should reimburse," he said.
Gupta added that the strike by doctors without notice was only illegal.
