Andhra Pradesh introduces e-policing, unveils online police network

Syed Amin Jafri in Hyderabad

The Andhra Pradesh government is all set to introduce e-COPS (e-Computerised Operations for Police Services) for online tracking of incidents of crime across the state.

Perhaps the first of its kind in India, e-COPS will computerize and network all police stations in the state.

While it is expected to enable the police to effectively control crime by providing them with necessary and timely data on crime-related activities, it will also make information more easily accessible to the public, state Home Minister Devender Goud said.

Announcing the e-COPS initiative at a media conference in Hyderabad on Saturday, Goud said the facility, which is aimed at providing good governance, greater transparency and a new dimension to the functioning of the police department, will be operational from June 17.

To begin with, e-COPS will be operational in 225 police stations covering three cities - Hyderabad (63 police stations), Visakhapatnam (35), Vijayawada (29) and two districts - Srikakulam (43) and Rangareddy (55).

In the near future, it will be extended to the entire state.

The concept will also be introduced in the traffic department and will eventually include databases from other relevant departments, like the home ministry, judiciary and hospitals, and other states too.

The concept is designed to reduce paper work and help the police in automatic maintenance of registers, generation of reports, data analysis, better planning and coordination, speedy detection of crimes and monitoring of court cases.

People can access the website of the state police department for information, like the status of a complaint, information on missing persons and vehicles.

Top-notch companies, such as Microsoft (platform and software licensing), Sun Microsystems (servers and integration), CISCO (routers and hubs), E-soft (system integration and development), Locuz (connectivity and networking applications), Pioneer Online (development of connectivity and routing logic), Oracle (database management and backend support) and APTECH (training of police personnel) have participated in this project.
