Income tax officials and Jammu and Kashmir Police searched several banks in Srinagar in an effort to locate the accounts of arrested Hurriyat Conference leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, a senior police official said on Tuesday.
"Income Tax department and police conducted a joint raid on Monday on some banks in connection with Geelani's accounts," Inspector General of Police K Rajendra Kumar said.
"We are still sifting through the documents. Nothing can be said as of now," he added.
He, however, declined to name the branches of the banks, which were searched late on Monday afternoon.
A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act and investigations are on, he said.
Chairman of Jammu and Kashmir Bank Mohammad Yousuf Khan said the IT officials visited the Barzullah branch of the bank in the outskirts of Srinagar seeking details of some accounts, which had been provided to them.
"They were also inquiring about a locker belonging to Geelani and I believe they have sealed it," Khan said.
Two other banks including Oriental Bank of Commerce were also searched but no details were available, police sources said.
They said IT officials had opened a locker in one of the banks.
