The National Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Commission has asked Bihar Director General of Police R R Prasad, Inspector General of Police (weaker sections) R L Kanaujia and Superintendent of Police (weaker sections) B B Prasad to appear before the court of the commission on June 25.
Commission member Vijay Kumar Choudhary said that the police officers have not seriously taken cases relating to atrocities against dalits and tribals.
He said that the charges made in a first information report, lodged in Patna in July 2000, in connection with the beating of a dalit, Ashok Kumar Choudhary, by landlords and the circle officer, Mohammed Shamim, in Wajirganj police station in Gaya district was found to be true by the investigating officer.
He said that the Bihar police initiated no action against the culprits and that the commission had previously issued summons to Kanaujia and Prasad.
"But the directives of the commission were ignored and an irresponsible letter was sent to the commission," Choudhary said, adding that action might be initiated against the three police officers.
The judicial powers, provided to the commission by the Constitution, would be used for this purpose, he added.
