Uterus removed without consent; patient to move MCI

Anand Mohan Sahay in Patna

The family members of a 25-year-old woman in Bihar, who has alleged that a gynaecologist removed her uterus without her consent, has decided to take up the matter with the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Anuja Choudhary of Gopalgunj district was admitted to Shubam hospital, a private nursing home in Patna, last Monday in the final stage of her pregnancy.

However, when she started bleeding despite a normal delivery, the doctor attending to her - Shanti Rai - said she would carry out a simple operation to stop the bleeding.

According to Anuja's father-in-law Dr Rajendra Thakur, a gynaecologist himself at a government hospital, the family came to know of the removal of the uterus only when he spoke to her.

"My daughter-in-law's uterus was removed without her written consent or that of her relatives in violation of medical norms," Thakur said.

He said that the private nursing home had snatched the documents, including the ultrasound report, pertaining to Anuja's case.

"Only when I confronted the doctor did she admit it. But she didn't give a satisfactory explanation for removing the uterus. Isn't that negligence and a violation of medical norms?" he asked.

However, Dr Shanti Rai told rediff.com that the removal of the uterus was necessary to save the patient's life and also that she had taken the verbal consent of the patient's mother.

Two FIRs have been lodged in the Patrakar Nagar police station in this regard, one by Dr Thakur and another by Vijay Kumar, an employee of the nursing home.

Meanwhile, two political parties - Bihar People' Party and the Lok Jan Shakti Party - have demanded cancellation of the medical registration of the concerned doctor for the unethical conduct.
